The Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA) holds a remarkable collection of over one hundred gold lacquered wood carvings rescued during the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

For the first formal unveiling of this collection, The GAFA Conservation and Preservation Department had spent 3 years of research and restoration effort to prepare the collection for public showcase.

The Opera within Chaozhou Wood Carvings

Chaozhou Opera is an ubiquitous subject among sculptural elements of Chaozhou architecture and furniture. Not only does it provide an aesthetic subject for decorative motif, but it reflects the core values of Chaozhou culture.

In the first part of the exhibit we looked at the collection through the opera it depicts. These wood carvings follow a specific storytelling format that has its roots in ancient Chinese paintings.

Using Chaozhou opera as the foundation for the first part of the exhibit, we juxtapose audio visual elements and stage drawings to create a multifaceted environment for the wood carvings displayed. This method provides a contextual background for the wood carvings, and also create a fun and enticing environment for non-professional visitors.

The Rituals in Wood Carvings The Rituals in Wood Carvings

For the second part of the exhibit, we explore the distinctive culture and rituals of Chaozhou through the collection of ritual artifacts. This meticulously crafted
collection ranges from a Sedan Chair for the Gods to Traveling Shrine of Ancestors.

To avoid creating a distracting environment for the intricately crafted artifacts, we used diagrams as the backdrop of the artifacts. Documentaries of the festive Chaozhou rituals are zoned separately in a dedicated space.

Capturing The Chaozhou Impression

Impressions of the Chaozhou culture is evident throughout the exhibit. From a tea area to the large scale paper lantern installation, the second part of the exhibit subtly provides a glimpse of the everyday life in Chaozhou.

Located in the South Coast of China, Chaozhou has a well kept tradition of Chinese culture and rituals.
Chaozhou culture has strong ties with their heritage and ancestry. Every Lunar New Year they have week long rituals that honor their ancestors and gods.
